The Digital Pound Survey – opportunities from the digital pound

The digital pound firm survey gives UK firms an opportunity to inform the Bank of their views on the opportunities or challenges in the digital pound ecosystem.

The digital pound firm survey gives UK firms an opportunity to inform the Bank of their views on the opportunities or challenges in the digital pound ecosystem.

The digital pound would be a retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) – a new form of electronic money for use by households and businesses for everyday payments. It would be directly issued by the Bank of England, in the same way banknotes are.

On 7 February 2023 the Bank of England and HM Treasury announced that they judge a digital pound is likely to be needed in the future, and published a Consultation Paper on ‘The digital pound: A new form of money for households and businesses?’, The Bank also published an accompanying Technology Working Paper, which details the technology considerations for the proposed digital pound.

This survey will provide a better understanding of whether UK firms would participate in a digital pound as a service provider or as end users, what they see as potential opportunities or challenges, and what they would expect from us as the operator of a potential digital pound infrastructure.

Private firms can participate in the digital pound ecosystem as service providers, or as users.
